Ideas for Stag Weekend Activities – Caving Video

Video of Caving in the Brecon BeaconsOne of our clients from the weekend kindly took a great video of their caving adventure activity with us.

Porth Yr Ogof

The caving adventure activity takes place in Porth Yr Ogof cave situated in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. Porth Yr Ogof (translated as the gateway to the cave) boasts the largest entrance of any cave in Wales at over 17 metres wide and almost 5m tall.

The maze of passages with multiple entrances and easy access has made this one of the most popular cave in South Wales for outdoor activity groups. It is estimated to have over 30,000 visitors per year. The cave has 15 different entrances leading to over a mile of accessible underground passageways which makes this very popular with outdoor groups to introduce people to caving. In normal weather conditions a dry rocky river bed leads up to the main entrance to the cave, but following rain this may quickly become a raging torrent as the Afon Mellte (the Lightning River) lives up to its name and quickly makes the cave inaccessible

Caving or speleology is the underground exploration of natural or man-made caverns. Caves are one of the most fascinating environments known to man where it is still possible to participate in original exploration. Cave systems have taken thousands of years to evolve their fantastic shapes, and crystal & clay formations.

This is the video of the caving activity in the Brecon Beacons.

Budapest Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Budapest is now would you believe second to Prague as one of the most popular stag weekend destinations. In 1989, the Hungarian communist party moved quietly aside as a tide of democracy swept across Eastern Europe. There has been a new spirit in the country, with Budapest being the main stimulus for change. Slowly regaining its position as the Paris of the east Budapest is a rare mix of old and new, with many reminders of its turbulent past. It is not a city which can be appreciated on a day trip. So linger for a few days, soak up the unique atmosphere and spirit of the people and enjoy!

Yes it sounds exciting and you will have a good time. However consider a few things before you ditch the UK for your stag weekend. Firstly the cost, the flights are not so cheap anymore. Take into account transfers to and from the airport as well and that price suddenly starts to increase. Delays with flights are another problem that can arise with budget airlines. This can be a problem if you only have a limited time available. Travel time is another issue – to and from the airport in the UK particularly if you only have a limited amount of time for the trip away. Finally if you intend it to be a big event you will find UK based stag weekends are more inclusive – more people will come for the reason outlined above.

Dublin Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Dublin, the tried and trusted favourite. If you are up for the craic then you need not look any further than one of Europe’s finest cities. Dublin is renowned for its hospitality, from the Guinness Brewery to Temple Bar to Punchestown Racecourse. Quality establishments line the streets and the Dublin area provides some of the most entertaining stag weekend activities in Europe.

Another victim of its own success in the last few years. It became too popular. Stag groups can now have some problems getting entry into bars and clubs in the Temple Bar area. As a result its popularity has diminished slightly.

Prague Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The front runner in Europe at the moment and has come from nowhere over the last ten years. There are a number of reasons for this. One of the main reasons is that it has only become available as a destination following the fall of the Iron Curtain. Therefore it has a novelty that is no longer associated with more traditional destinations such as Amsterdam. Secondly, the budget airlines flying the city make it accessible.

With ancient churches and cobbled lanes, the city of 100 spires is unique. It is dominated by one of Europe’s oldest castles. There are plenty of modern restaurants and bars with the smoky beer cellars serving hearty bread dumplings and slabs of roast pork are also popular.

Yes it sounds exciting and you will have a good time. However consider a few things before you ditch the UK for your stag weekend. Firstly the cost, the flights are not so cheap anymore. Amsterdam Stag Weekend Ideas

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Amsterdam, the tried and trusted favourite is still up there with the best. It has fallen down the popularity rankings in recent years due to the increasing number of former Eastern Bloc capitals becoming more accessible such as Prague and Budapest. It will be interesting to see if the opening up of the Baltic States will further undermine Amsterdam.

It still remains one of the greatest small cities in the world – its population is only 735,000. Regarded as the city of tolerance. Soft drugs are legal in the coffee shops and prostitution has been legal since 1815 – it’s even been taxed by the Government since 1996. If you do visit with a stag group then it won’t be to see the canals, flower markets, galleries or museums. However the city does have both a Sex and Erotic Museum.

Yes it sounds exciting and you will have a good time. However consider a few things before you ditch the UK for your stag weekend. Firstly the cost, the flights are not so cheap anymore. Bristol Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Bristol, the maritime City that has been transformed over the last 20 years. A real party town with an influx of new bars, restaurants and clubs in the “Floating Harbour” area of the city. Bristol is an exciting city, overflowing with intriguing, traditional and occasionally off the wall things to do and see. Its harbourside location is lined with attractions, boats, restaurants and museums. The mix of historic and new, and having been designated a European Centre of Culture, the city continues to celebrate in style with a year round calendar of events and festivals.
A bit limited when it comes to outdoor activities but the usual suspects are there such as karting and paintball. Yes it sounds appealing and you’ll probably have a good time. However it could be so much better. Unfortunately Bristol is yet another example of these homogenous cities we have increasingly replicated throughout the UK. The same usual suspects along the High Street, the same conglomerate chain restaurants, bars and even nightclubs. Familiar like an old pair of socks yes – a different and new experience it is not. For a stag weekend you want something different, a one off experience.

Get out of the smoke and away from the rat-race. If you want something memorable and a real experience try outdoor adventure activities in natures’s real adventure playground – the Brecon Beacons National Park. This is the place to get up close and personal with the outdoors, challenge yourself with the only risk being you’ll have a great time. Get away from that urban jungle and experience the outdoors in Wales.

Swansea Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Swansea, home to Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bonnie Tyler and of course it’s most famous son Dylan Thomas. A wonderful seafront location where you can sample the famous Mumbles Mile Pub crawl. A location which has found its feet as a stag destination in recent years.

This is due to a number of reasons including its accessibility from London in particular. It’s proximity to the Gower Peninsula, the first region in the UK to be designated An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its stunning beaches. An area some argue is better for surfing than other better known destinations.

One of the best locations for offering the varierty of activities that many other destinations lack. You have the best of both worlds, the urban buzz and access to the great outdoors in the form of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the coast. Caving, climbing, canyoning, guided hill walks, mountaineering, surfing and coasteering would not be top of your list of activities for many other cities in the UK.

Cardiff Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Home to the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff City AFC, Caroline Street (chip alley to the locals), The Millennium Centre, Cardiff Castle and Shirley Bassey. Home to the FA Cup final for the last few years and as a result many of you would have already sampled its delights. An increasingly popular destination with stag groups. It is arguably one of the most dynamic cities in Britain, with its lively mix of culture, arts, shopping and nightlife. It has undergone a huge transformation in recent years, re-inventing itself as a 24-hour city. A true rival to compete with Dublin and Edinburgh.

Outstanding visitor attractions, a revitalised Cardiff Bay and a must sample atmosphere on match days when Wales are playing in the Stadium. If you plan to visit at any time try to combine it with tickets for a match or a tour of the Stadium.

One of the best locations for offering the varierty of activities that many other destinations lack. You have the best of both worlds, the urban buzz and access to the great outdoors in the form of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the coast.

London Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

London, where do you start with a city of 8 million people. So much to offer with the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of the Metropolis. If it’s just sight seeing at Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Houses of Parliament or shopping at Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nics.

This is part of the problem with the “smoke” in that there is too much choice. So you have to be certain to plan your stag weekend carefully to get the most from it. The other thing to keep in mind is the cost. Of all the destinations this is likely to be the most expensive – £3.50 to £4 a drink is not unusual. Compare this to £1.90 in Wales with stag-party-weekend.co.uk. A massive difference.

Newcastle Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Newcastle, home to Newcastle Football Club, Craig Bellamy’s Fan Club and the infamous Bigg Market. What can you say about the Bigg Market that hasn’t already been said before. This bustling city area has put Newcastle on the map as being one of the top party cities of the world.

Although it is quieter on a Tuesday and Wednesday, this is where the young crowd flock to in their thousands every weekend. Even with around twenty pubs in this area alone, you still get queues forming outside some of them as most get packed out very quickly.
At the bottom end of the Bigg Market one notable pub worth mentioning is Balmbra’s which stands on the site of an old music hall. It was here the famous song “Blaydon Races” was first performed.

A great place to visit but a hell of a long way to drive for most people for a short weekend. This is especially the case if you have people travelling from all over the UK.

Newquay Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Newquay, home of the surfer (or those who would like to think they can become surfers). The fun commences when you catch your first wave – you’re never “board” after that. This is the self-professed surf capital of the UK (more on that later). It attracts many a stag group given this reputation. It undoubtedly has a good nightlife with lots going on but there is only so much “hey dude” (not a Beatles song) type people trying to be hip you can take.

And what’s all this about surfing capital. The surfing is actually no better than that you can experience on the Gower peninsula in South Wales. The Gower is a better location as there is a much larger area to surf in so you’re not bumping into each other. Also the Swansea nightlife is as busy as Newquay. So if it’s good surfing, a good nightlife and not the image thing you’re after then Swansea is the place to visit for your stag weekend.

Bournemouth Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Bournemouth is renowned for its seven miles of golden beaches and beautiful parks and gardens, Bournemouth blends the contemporary with the traditional. A stuffy image where people aspire to retire to.

The home of the mighty AFC Bournemouth – come on you Cherries! An abundance of bars and nightclubs but for some reason we have always found it difficult to get a late drink in the town. Contemporary bar grills and restaurants which include Toko, and Bliss. It also has a Spearmint Rhino. Apparently the town has a late night capacity of over 20,000. A range of watersports such as speed boats and coastal cruising.

One of England’s more traditional seaside resorts someway removed from the Blackpool image. Again although you will have a good time is it really somewhere that will provide that one off experience you’re looking for your stag weekend.

Not to everyone’s liking but if you still want a lively nightlife but with more variety on the weekend and a real experience try outdoor adventure activities in natures’s real adventure playground – the Brecon Beacons National Park. This is the place to get up close and personal with the outdoors, challenge yourself with the only risk being you’ll have a great time.

Get away from that urban jungle and and experience the outdoors in Wales and the nightlife of Swansea. Not only a different country but a different way of seeing that country. Caving, climbing, canyoning, guided hill walks, mountaineering, surfing and coasteering would not be top of your list of activities for Bournemouth.

Blackpool Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

You get exactly what it says down the middle of that stick of rock in Blackpool. Your traditional “kiss me quick” seaside destination. No ambiguity here. An excellent good fun destination for that weekend away with the lads. Sun, sea, sex and sangria – no that’s a different destination. Sun (newspaper not the weather), sea, strongbow (too much of) and no sex (as a result of the too much strongbow).

If you’re looking for fine restaurants and dining, museums and art galleries then you’ve chosen the wrong place. If you’re looking for candy floss, bingo and donkeys then this is for you. Famous for its terrifying rides – enough about the women lets get onto the Pleasure Beach

As well as the drinking to excess you have the famous Pleasure Beach with its enormous range of rollercoasters and rides. There is also so much more in the town to occupy your time such as karting, paintballing, quad biking and many more activities. Unfortunately Blackpool has become a victim of its own success. Many would say it has become too popular with stag groups with the usual consequences.

Get away from that urban jungle and the other culture vultures in Blackpool and experience the outdoors in Wales and the nightlife of Swansea.. Caving, climbing, canyoning, guided hill walks, mountaineering, surfing and coasteering would not be top of your list of activities for Blackpool.

Nottingham Stag Weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Nottingham, the home of (here come the stereotypes!) Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest, The Sheriff of Nottingham and that once great football team …Notts County! (Apologies Forest fans) It has acquired something of a reputation in recent years as being a prime destination for stag groups. It may have something to do with the urban myth relating to the ratio of women to men in the City.

A good central location within the UK. A wide choice of activities are available which have developed due to the popularity of the City as a stag destination. The city has an excellent nightlife with stag groups historically having few problems getting past the doormen. However it has been the victim of its own success which might explain why its popularity has started to wane in comparison to other destinations. Some problems have been experienced in the City centre in recent years given the numbers pouring in on the weekend.

Yes it sounds appealing and you’ll probably have a good time. However it could be so much better. Unfortunately Nottingham is yet another example of these homogenous towns we have increasingly replicated throughout the UK but particularly in England. The same usual suspects along the High Street, the same conglomerate chain restaurants, bars and even nightclubs. Familiar like an old pair of socks yes – a different and new experience it is not. Brighton stag weekends

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Suitable for those who don’t know if they want to be hens or stags. The beautiful seaside town in Sussex put on the map by the Prince Regent. Famous for its Royal Pavilion, Grand Hotel, piers, shopping in the lanes and Chris Eubank. A good nightlife and plenty of excellent restaurants. The number of daytime activities is more limited than some other popular UK destinations but still plenty to satisfy everyone. Horse racing, paintball, sailing and more.

Yes it sounds appealing and you’ll probably have a good time. However it could be so much better. Unfortunately Brighton, although being a seaside town, is yet another example of these homogenous towns we have increasingly replicated throughout the UK but particularly in England.
