Canyoning in Wales with Adventure BritainOur  Canyoning activity in the Brecon Beacons, Wales is up there as one of the best wet and wild experiences in the world says Rough Guides. Following their visit , Rough Guides have  placed our canyoning up there with the best in the world!

Canyoning with Adventure Britain
Rough Guides – Canyoning Up There With Best in World

Rough Guides, have visited and taken part in our canyoning activity in 2013. Rough Guides is a leading publisher of travel and reference information known for its ‘tell it like it is’ attitude, accurate, up-to-date content and informed contemporary writing. They have described our canyoning experience in the Brecon Beacons as “..being up there with the best wet and wild experiences in the world!”

Adventure Britain’s Activity

Rough Guides describes our canyoning as one of best in world

Call of the Wild’s  activity very much falls within the canyoning, river running and adventure walk descriptions set out above. Canyoning or canyoneering with us in the Brecon Beacons, Wales is not to be confused with the other activities such as gorge walking. Our canyoning sessions are very much for the adrenaline junky! How does jumping off 20ft waterfalls sound? What about a 30ft waterfall? If this sounds appealing then give us a call because this is the activity for you.

“Most fantastic fun we’ve had for ages. Can’t stop talking about canyoning. Instructors were brilliant, excellent sense of humour and very patient. This was great value – the perfect weekend.” Connie Sutherland

What is Canyoning ?

The best way of describing our canyoning activity is white water rafting but without the raft. With our guides, you descend a stunning steep sided gorge by various ways and means. This can involve sliding down rapids, swimming down rapids, floating down fast flowing chutes and waves, walking behind some breathtaking waterfalls and of course jumping off those jaw dropping waterfalls.

An outstanding activity for a stag weekend

Ideas for Stag Weekend Activities – Caving Video

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

Video of Caving in the Brecon BeaconsOne of our clients from the weekend kindly took a great video of their caving adventure activity with us.

Porth Yr Ogof

The caving adventure activity takes place in Porth Yr Ogof cave situated in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. Porth Yr Ogof (translated as the gateway to the cave) boasts the largest entrance of any cave in Wales at over 17 metres wide and almost 5m tall.

The maze of passages with multiple entrances and easy access has made this one of the most popular cave in South Wales for outdoor activity groups. It is estimated to have over 30,000 visitors per year. The cave has 15 different entrances leading to over a mile of accessible underground passageways which makes this very popular with outdoor groups to introduce people to caving. In normal weather conditions a dry rocky river bed leads up to the main entrance to the cave, but following rain this may quickly become a raging torrent as the Afon Mellte (the Lightning River) lives up to its name and quickly makes the cave inaccessible

Caving or speleology is the underground exploration of natural or man-made caverns. Caves are one of the most fascinating environments known to man where it is still possible to participate in original exploration. Cave systems have taken thousands of years to evolve their fantastic shapes, and crystal & clay formations.

This is the video of the caving activity in the Brecon Beacons.

Stag & Hen Weekends – The Facts

Sunday, February 15th, 2015

Quad Biking in the Brecon BeaconsHere are some interesting hen and stag night facts courtesy of Banana Moon Clothing. It is surprising that only 32%  of people will hold their stag or hen nights in another country. I thought this figure would have been higher but obviously the majority see sense and decide to stay in the UK.

Infographic-Stage-and-Hen-665x1024

Having recently experienced a stag weekend in Europe, Poland to be exact, I still find it difficult to understand why anyone would wish to leave the country for their stag weekend. First of all the cost excludes many of the people who the groom would want to attend. Secondly in my experience all you tend to do is see the inside of numerous bars. In which case you could be anywhere in Europe, including the UK and don’t need to travel to some strange foreign city, pay for expensive flights, spend half the weekend travelling and get frustrated with delays!

For those who stay in the UK only 28% have an event at home whilst 24% do sports or extreme activities, which is what our favourite stag activity canyoning would fall into.

In addition 21% try driving activities, probably the stags, and 20% have spa or beauty treatment, probably the  girls attached to the 21% doing the driving activity!

Of  the 71% who go to pubs, bars and clubs do they also do activities in the day. This is the experience of our stag weekend groups. They will take part in adventurous activities during the day such as canyoning, caving, climbing and quad biking whilst in the evening they will then visit a pub, bar or club.

Toughest Stag Weekend in the World – Brecon Beacons

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

WHILE most lads on their stag dos head off for a weekend of drunken debauchery, that was never going to be an option for a top-class Thai boxer preparing for both a Premier League fight and world-title bid writes Paul Cook in the Northern Echo

So when Michael Dicks’ trainer and best man Paul Hamilton came to organise his protege’s party, he had to think outside the box.

On February 10, Dicks, Hamilton, and another 28 of their friends will head for the Brecon Beacons to take part in a series of endurance challenges to raise money for the NSPCC.

For two days, the party, including fellow members of Darlington Boxing and Martial Arts Academy where Mr Dicks trains, and fighters from across the country, will tackle some of the country’s toughest terrain and potentially hazardous weather conditions.

They will be divided into two teams of 15 competing over a 31-mile bicycle ride circumnavigating the Beacons, a seven-mile kayak and the infamous Fan Dance – a 24km walk across rugged terrain carrying a 32lb rucksack used for SAS selection – only a third of participants are expected to pass the test.

The losing team will face the Royal Navy’s ice bath at the top of the mountains.

So next time you’re thinking how tough you’ve got it arranging your stag weekend give a thought to these boys. At least you’ve got something to look forward to on your stag party!

Stag and Hen Weekend Spending Exceeds £5bn

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

stag and hen parties PARTY-GOERS are spending £5billion on stag and hen dos every year, writes the Daily Mirror. The average man coughs up £195 on their pal’s last night of freedom, while women stump up £163.The cost has rocketed since 2009, when it stood at £91 each.

Stags and hens spend 25% more than they initially budgeted for.And more than 400,000 men have stumped up £3,000 on a single event.Transport and alcohol are the biggest bills for men, while for women it is beauty, research by Lending Stream found.

Office worker Tom Holmes, 38, of Birmingham, has been on three stag weekends in 12 months. He said: “The cost of seeing a mate off into married life is frightening.”

Stag DoTop Tips – How to Arrange One

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

We’ve had many years experience  dealing with stag groups and there do appear to be a number of basic lessons that can be learnt about planning the perfect stag do

.

1. Date of Wedding Confirmed

You need enough time to arrange the stag do and for the groom to recover, or get back from wherever you send him in just his mankini. Sounds obvious but unfortunately many best men get this wrong and don’t leave themselves enough time to arrange things.

2. Stag Do Date Confirmed asap

It is recommended that this should be no closer than two weeks before the wedding although this is flexible. Any later and things can start to go wrong – like the groom doesn’t make it to the wedding. As he is your responsibility (best man) do you really want to face the bride and explain what has happened? Setting rough dates with the Groom will also make it easier in narrowing down the numbers for the event.

It is extremely unusual for everyone you invite to be able to make the stag night. The most important person it has to be convenient for is the Groom so the dates have to set to suit him.

3. Choice of Lads to Invite

The Groom obviously, his friends from home, school, college, work and family. It is becoming more common for invites to be issued to the Groom’s father and , wait for it, the Bride’s father – you’ll have to ask the Groom about that one! Don’t get too large. Don’t forget you’re going to have to organise this lot. The bigger the group the more difficult it is to manage. You’ll have to collect the money etc. We’ve all been there and had that one person who is slow to pay.

Also you have a number of different groups eg. school friends, college then they may split into their respective groups and not mix as much as the Groom would like. So keep the group size manageable. The Groom is the best person to ask as he knows them all. One important tip is to get the e-mail addresses of all those invited. This is by far and away the easiest way to co-ordinate everyone.

Finally we all know one or two, how do we say, difficult people, especially when drinking! It would be prudent to not invite those people if you feel they won’t get on with the group or locals. You want this to be remembered for the right reasons not the wrong ones.

4. Choice of Venue and what to do?

Again depends on the Groom. It is becoming more popular to go away for a weekend and try some unusual stag activities. The budget of the group, and the amount of time off work and spent away from partners/families etc will dictate how far you travel. Is it going to be 3 weeks in Barbados or  a night in the local boozer?

5. You Organise it or Should You Use an Expert

Depends on you and what you intend to do. However it is always advisable to use a company to arrange everything for you, especially for bigger groups. This is far less trouble than doing it yourself and can be more cost effective. You should also bear in mind that many places such as pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants no longer accept stag groups – Dublin and Tenby being prime examples of placing where stag groups are becoming less welcome.
Ensure that whoever you use to arrange everything for you – be sure you know what you are paying for and what is excluded.

Is it full board or are evening meals extra, what about lunch? Do you have to drive everywhere yourself or are transfers provided? Do you really want to be looking for an activity venue with a convoy of 10 cars and you navigating? If you are wary of using a company then ask the company for testimonials or if you contact past customers.
It’s your head on the block so make sure the groom has a memorable time (well maybe being memorable is asking too much) !

6. What Goes on Tour Stays on Tour or the Stag Do in This Case

Jokes and embarrassing the Groom are traditional but remember don’t go too far. You are the one who will have to explain to the Bride why her beloved hasn’t got any body hair! You know the Groom best and will know where to draw the line – do you? A good way to get everyone involved quickly to have t-shirts printed with photos or nick names of everyone. This breaks the ice and gets everyone talking. The other one which is very popular (those of you who have sampled Swansea will vouch for this) fancy dress – a must not only for the Groom but also the group.

  • Don’t be pressured by the group.
  • Keep a kitty. It is far easier with a big group than going in rounds as someone will be missed out or miss their round – especially as the night draws on. Gather the money early on and replenish when needed. So those who wish to drop out later on in the night can.
  • Make sure you can get back to your accommodation at the end of the night! Take the address or phone number with you. You’d be amazed how many blokes forget or don’t know where they are staying. This is especially true if they travel in someone else’s car. Many companies will arrange the transport for you as a matter of course.
  • Finally and most important of all LOOK AFTER THE GROOM HE IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You may have to lie for the rest of his life, which could be short if his prospective wife found out about some of the things that traditionally go on.

Budget Due To Hit Overseas Stag Do’s

Monday, June 21st, 2010

On 22nd June, the Chancellor of the Exchequer will give his first budget speech. It is expected to be quite a hard budget and amongst other things it is expected that he is going to raise the tax on flights. This will be bad news for those stag groups wanting to go overseas. However, there is an exciting alternative … 🙂
